The iRobot Roomba 980, the most recent in a line of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is a staple for every modern home. This model is extremely powerful suction and it comes with a HEPA filter that will assist anyone suffering from allergies. It also comes with a large battery that can be cleaned for up to two hours, and return to its dock automatically once the bin is full.
Smart mapping is a different feature that helps it identify areas of your home that require attention and creates a path for cleaning around them. This technology is extremely effective in navigating around toys that have been left on the floor, or furniture legs sticking out from underneath things. Roomba also has a sensor that will snap Roomba to reality if it starts to drift away from its initial location.
iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom, which do not have bristles, and thus tend to resist tangles better than the previous models. They're also higher than the older rollers and can better fit under beds and couches that are low, and they're designed to help this model navigate more easily on varying flooring types.
The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other high-end models by its new dirt detection feature, which makes use of cameras to detect embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous model which relied on an algorithm that was driven by sensors to bounce around the room and scrub the area three times, at different angles.
The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It was successful in getting rid of pet hair, but had a difficult time with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.
Despite these small shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and isn't even close to being as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It comes with many of the features you would expect from a top model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps or home integrations you'll find in other top contenders.
The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready to use immediately. After taking off the pull tab for the battery and the yellow bin insert from undercarriage, all that you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its big "Clean" button, and let it get to work. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery is out or it's stuffed with debris. It also has indicator lights on the top of the device to indicate that the bin is full, it requires recharging, or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
